I'm (finally!) reading Braiding Sweetgrass, and just finished a chapter on the spring maple syrup harvest in Maine.

I can't tell you how much I now appreciate the idea of March as maple syrup month. There are still only tiny signs of spring around, most things are still just brown and still. But maple syrup month tells us it's only a matter of time before the green returns.

When I was growing up in New York, March was also maple sugar icicle month. It was still cold enough in those days that we had hard freezes into late March or sometimes early April, but interspersed with days warm enough to make the sap run. So if you broke a small twig off a maple branch, and came back a few days later, there would be a small icicle that if you took off and sucked on, it tasted faintly of maple. A joy. <3
