Academia and remunerative work

While trying to motivate myself to get work done this week, I keep thinking fondly of
mallorys_camera's use of the phrase "remunerative work."
It's sort of hard to apply the phrase to academic work, which doesn't know how to respect boundaries. For example, the main urgent thing on my desk this week has been an overdue manuscript review, which I conducted for free, as do most academics. Finally done with that this afternoon.
Meanwhile, I will go to my institution's Town Hall shortly, out of some indecipherable sense of obligation.
But I'm going to attend while sitting on the BikeErg, because I might as well get something useful done during it.
And, an update, I did, and I'm glad I did.
