rebeccmeisterSo, yesterday's class was 100% on Zoom, with upperclassmen, around half of whom I've taught previously.
Today's class was 50% in-person, 50% on Zoom. With freshmen. And it was just...weird.
But there's compounding weirdness, and it's my own damn fault.
Most of the class was spent on some problem-solving exercises, because in addition to teaching during a pandemic, I'm trying out a form of "flipped" classroom, where lectures are videos online, and class time is a chance to work on problem-solving. And it's pretty clear that these new students have never encountered something like this before, and it's baffling to them.
For the students on Zoom, hopefully the breakout rooms were helpful. I couldn't monitor them in any way because that would bombard all of the students who were in-person with whatever was happening in that particular breakout room, which just seems extra awkward. I suppose I could get two Zoom instances going for myself, now that I'm typing this all out, and just use the private instance to pop in and out of breakout rooms.
I don't know if I'm going to stick with it. A problem is that I'm in classrooms that can only hold 50% of my students at one time, and I feel really stupid for not having been insistent on having classrooms that could hold all of my students at once - at least, all of the in-person students.
For some reason, I have an enormous amount of work to do now. Back at it.
