(
twoeleven came up with the apt homonym)
Books feel like a dilemma right now. It's the whole shipping/packaging thing, plus not wanting to support the Amazonia in any way (from what I gathered they own AbeBooks, fyi).
I miss libraries.
So, to that end: I am thinking I might like some form of open-source ebook reader. Do any of you know anything about them?
I found this, but haven't done anything with it other than starting to read: https://thenewstack.io/the-open-book-project-an-ebook-reader-you-can-build-yourself/

Date: 2020-06-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(One pal whom I tried to rally to the cause told me, "Of course, I like the revolution! But I like new toasters, too.")
Did not know they owned AbeBooks.
And I know asolutely nothing about open-source ebook readers. I read ebooks on my phone.

Date: 2020-06-15 11:08 pm (UTC)I unfortunately still occasionally wind up giving money to the Amazonia, but look long and hard for alternatives as much as I can. Fuckers.

Hoopla only lets you check out 10 items PER MONTH. Libby is difficult to navigate.
Also our local book store, The Tattered Cover, has always had issues....
Our other local "book" store, Black and Read, is a book yard sale. You'll find something interesting, but not what you want.
I was given a 5 year subscription to Kindle Unlimited so I'm mostly reading that. I'm curious how the authors are reimbursed.
But none of it is: "Ooh a book about garnishes! And a new comic book. And book about Basque country...." that the library supplies :( I guess Black and Read does, maybe I'll go on Saturday.

I tried to go to our local, family owned hardware store today to buy gardening gloves and PEOPLE HAD MASKS AROUND THEIR NECKS. I just turned and walked out. And Monty needs a new snuffle mat, so yes, off to to Amazon...

Date: 2020-06-16 12:25 am (UTC)Sadly, because our campus is small, our campus library is also pretty small, and it has been closed during the shutdown.
Today I am also thinking about how nice it would be to be able to read journal articles on an ebook screen instead of the computer.

Re hardware stores: GAH. I hate people.
People here have generally been good in the stores I frequent here. I wonder if that has to do with how badly NY was hit at first.
Interestingly, here, the Ace Hardware was 100 times better than the Despot. Which is annoying, because the Despot has more of the lumber-type stuff I would like to buy right now.
