Thoughts and memories:

-Growing up, when the owners of the dry cleaners next door to our house finished building the grocery store addition, suddenly there was compressor fan noise day and night, for the refrigeration units. The compressor fan noise seems like it has gotten worse over the years.

-For some reason, the sound of the trains passing through Tempe didn't bother me much. I think that's because the noise was transient and would pass.

-I love mynoise.net .

-As my dad grew closer to dying, noises started to bother him more. The endless leaf-blowing neighbors. Loud grandkids.

-Somehow, the Grandma House hasn't been especially noisy. There are periodic noises from neighbors and dogs, but nothing too insidiously persistent so far. Noise is the biggest thing that gives me pause when considering other housing arrangements. It has been such a relief to have my own office, on a quiet campus, in a quiet basement corner of the building.

There are noises you can get used to.

Our previous home was over a railway tunnel and the only time you noticed was when, for some reason, a train _didn't_ run!

This has been a problem for the last decade... Seattle is the city of constant construction, so there has been a construction project ongoing outside of my last four residences, the entire time I've been there. It makes working from home super unfun at times.

Agreed on the distant train noise - I grew up hearing that and found it easy to be accustomed to. Subways, on the other hand, are impossible to ignore, IMO. When I briefly lived practically underneath the elevated portion of the BART, the noise was unbearable due to the way those trains screech on the tracks.
