rebeccmeisterYesterday's regatta was a bit of a scramble in the early stages. When our coxswain arrived, just as we were bringing our boat down to launch, he softly mumbled that he was sorry he was late because he had had a hard time getting his parents to wake up and head over to the regatta. (he is a high-school teammate; we normally don't have coxswains at practice at 5:30 am and primarily scull.) Okay, kid, I can't fault you for trying. Glad you made it.
I now have yet another new set of blisters from rowing starboard, including one on my left thumb that is bad enough that I have to wear dishwashing gloves to was the dishes. Starboard is still so much better than port!
Our coach entered our Women's 4+ into the Men's event because at the time he put in the entry, there weren't any other women's boats entered. By the time of the regatta, one other women's 4+ had entered. This regatta is mostly for juniors - there are just 1xes, 4+es, and mixed 8+es for masters. When we got down to the launching dock, I explained what had happened to the dockmaster, and he was able to switch us over to the Women's 4+. We didn't know this by the time we were down at the starting line, so the starting marshal decided he would send us off with the men's 4+es anyway so we would start in bow number sequence (easier for the timekeepers to keep track of).
I don't know what our spacing was like against the men's 4+ that started in front of us, but I'm pretty darned sure we gained distance against the men's 4+ that started behind us. The final results suggest we had a whoppingly fast time - so fast that it's unlikely, especially based on what my SpeedCoach was displaying for our splits. But it was nice to get out and get in a race with teammates. The weather and water were decent, and our set wasn't excruciatingly terrible. Plus, our coxswain and his parents were totally thrilled by our win!
