At long last, last night, I got started with hand quilting.

My first ant is pretty comical:


Note the weirdness with the antennae. The left legs also look a little bedraggled. Still! I am very glad I decided to start with this practice piece, especially because it's small enough to carry around with me. By the time I finish this whole project, I will have quilted hundreds of ants.

Hand-quilting might seem tedious, but I am finding it reasonably satisfying.

Did I miss something? Why are you quilting ants?

Over a decade ago, I started making a quilt with my grandmother, out of some fabric she had in her quilting stash. She has passed away, but at some point I went through some of the stuff that I had left at my parents' house and found the quilting project and decided I should finish it. The original part was super girly, which doesn't really fit with my overall aesthetic sense, so I decided it would be cool to hand-quilt it with ants. But I don't have any quilting experience, so I started by piecing together fabric to make a cat bed and am practicing the ants on it.

I just like the notion of a cute quilt all covered in ants. :^)
