Brownies

I am finding myself tired of both the Baker's Chocolate classic brownie recipe, and Alton Brown's brownie recipe is slightly too rich for everyday brownie occasions. Thus, suggestions?

I like the one of the variations from the fanny farmer cookbook. I can send it to you if you would like.

Is it similar to this version? I wound up trying these (although I made some substitutions because I had bittersweet chocolate on hand). My damned oven runs too hot, so the outer edges got a little crispy. They came out better than the Baker's chocolate ones, so that's progress in my book.

Not quite

Here is mine:
4 oz butter
4 oz dark chocolate (or unsweetened. Doesn't matter) chopped up

Melt in a pan over low/medium heat. Remove from heat.
Add to chocolate mixture:
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 Tbs vanilla

Stir well.
Then add:
3/4 cup AP flour
1 tsp salt

Pour into 8X8 buttered/floured pan and bake at 350F for about 25 minutes. Knife should come out clean when tested.

Let them cool, cut them up. Eat them all. Don't share.

Hmm, your version looks like it would make a better total quantity of brownie. Thank you! Also the crazy-long baking time in the version I posted was crazy-long.

No suggestions, but jealousy/appreciation! Brownies are delicious. [grin]

Hahaha, I am mostly hoping that if I bring along brownies on this weekend's brevet, I won't feel like buying candy bars when we stop at convenience stores. I just know that I'll want something solid that contains sugar and chocolate! Hmm, I might swirl in some peanut butter while I'm at it.

Brownies are delicious but I have particular tastes... I like the a-little-cakey ones rather than the super fudgy rich ones. (Basically, the more they are like dark chocolate, the less I am going to like them.) I am totally the queen of Snickers bars while hiking, though. They have peanuts! That's like a real food! Trail running is differently challenging, because sometime I want running food (aka pure sugar) and sometimes I want hiking food (actual food). Pretty directly proportional to how much of the trail run is runnable for me, heh. But it does mean that I end up carrying all kinds of things in case I decide I need them. It's not like it makes me much slower.

I have yet to figure out the sugar-containing hot beverage container for bicycling without spilling or scalding my face.

I carry around a carabiner mug from Bulldog News, like thus. The lid screws completely closed. That makes it a bit less convenient for riding and sipping the warm beverage at the same time, but I kind of think it's a good idea to just pause, unscrew the lid, enjoy a sip, screw the lid back on, and carry on my way.

I crocheted a cozy for it, as you'll note, because it isn't insulated. :-D

Unfortunately, the manufacturers who make these mugs have gotten cheaper about their materials over the years, so in more recent renditions of this mug (this one is Mug 4.0) I've occasionally had problems with the lids not screwing on correctly or popping off, grr.

I generally like the Klean Kanteen line of thermoses, but I DESPISE travel mug lids that are finicky to clean out. So I have the regular lid for my thermos, and also pause, unscrew, sip, screw, with that one, too. It's less convenient to tote because it lacks the awesome caribiner handle, though.

Hah, yeah, I have screw-shut insulated thermoses for hiking that I could repurpose similarly, but I was unable to figure out anything I could use like a water bottle or hydration bladder where I wouldn't have to stop. Maybe the answer just is "you have to stop".

I crocheted a cozy for it, as you'll note

OF COURSE YOU DID. [giggling] Yesterday I rode my bike to the tea shop and thought of you. After martial arts, though, and I didn't knit anything. Half credit.

I think for hot/warm beverages, it's generally best to stop...too much risk involved in accidentally drinking a beverage that's too hot and scalding your mouth!

And it seems like any container that's flexible enough to permit squeezing, wouldn't be sufficiently heat-resistant.

On the flipside, in AZ in the middle of summer, ya might as well put a tea bag in your bike bottle, because the water WILL get that warm over the course of the ride. :-D

I would still award full credit, even without the knitting. ;-)

I don't mind box mixes per se, but having to deal with the extra packaging makes me sigh.

oh! I lurk~

Serious cookie. We call them devil bars around here.
Best if you can keep it frozen.
The cookie base is Nabisco famous wafer, but I only use half the suggested amount. People have wondered how it would be with caramel or a jam, but I haven't tried other alterations.
