One of the habits of the Arizona Outlaws, back when everyone actually lived in Arizona, involved getting together at the beginning of each year to plan out regattas for the year. This has to be done if one intends to race seriously, because it's only possible to set up a training schedule if you know race dates to work towards. The system has fallen apart, to some extent, as everyone has scattered. I rely on the Aggies to set the racing agenda, for the most part.

I'm in the midst of working on my own travel plans at the moment, which sometimes get pretty complicated (see August of last year, and the Portland-Seattle-Korea-Seattle adventures). But I'm thinking back to that Outlaw planning scheme, because it seems to me that having a vision for the upcoming year is helpful. Also, if I get the plans nailed down, I won't have to think about them as much. To some extent, I want to downsize my travel, because it can be draining (financially, physically) and I'm concerned about the environmental costs of flying. Downsizing also argues in favor of intentional plans. But what does it mean for me to downsize travel? Hard to say. I'd have to track my travel over the last couple of years to really tell you.

I've got a quick trip out to Arizona coming up this upcoming weekend, plus a weeklong trip at the end of April. After that, my next major travel will be the first two weeks of July, which is still getting sorted out, but likely involves stops in Minnesota, Montana, and Seattle. I want to go back to Boston in October for the Head of the Charles, and am pondering Thanksgiving for this year.

You see, the USRowing Annual Convention will be in Seattle, and happens the week after Thanksgiving. So it's tempting to spend Thanksgiving in Seattle, and then I-don't-know-what for SolsticeChristmasHanukkahKwanzaa. I think I'll aim to stay south somewhere between here and southern California. Maybe I'll just go and bike camp out in Big Bend.

Aside from that, I'll go to just one conference this year, the Entomology meeting, which is conveniently located in Austin in November.
