After Monday night practice, the weather has been so squirrelly this week that my remaining water practices were canceled and we went to the Rec Center instead.

We have a very nice athletic facility here, but it's lacking in rowing amenities, and the net effect of this is that this just feels like an off-week. I wake up, I go to the Rec Center, I come home and eat delicious, warm, buttery, homemade croissants spread with a smear of Nutella, then I go off to the lab, where mornings are eaten up by cricket metabolic rate measurements. Afternoons have been a mix, nothing especially special. Evenings consist of some perfunctory eating, reading pages in Batavia's Graveyard (a nautical thriller and true story!), and then sleep.

Conditions like this make it tempting to skip blogging altogether.

Something that I've been struggling with - my status as a university employee (non-student) means I'm not eligible to race with the crew. The practice times I signed up for have gone towards either coxing or coaching from the single, which leaves no time for training to race in the single. Reminds me of the compromises I had to make in the fall, to knowingly and imperfectly juggle coaching and rowing. Also, what will happen when summer arrives? These factors make it difficult for me to stay engaged with rowing here.

On the other hand, my brand-new ergometer showed up today, yay! I'm reminded of the period when [livejournal.com profile] dichroic and T were living in Taiwan, where it was difficult for them to get in much water time. At least now, if all else fails, I can hunker down and erg. It's something, even if it's a far cry from actual rowing on actual water.

On that note, time to steel myself for an erg session.
