I don't think a lot of this is Texas but instead rural. South Dakota is a lot of the same way. Kids ride their bikes through town. I did. People are more laid back. When things become a question of morality (often for illogical reasons), things get weird, but I guess a lot of people find it nice that there is a sort of morality police at work. It sucks to wind up on the wrong side of it. This happens less so in college towns, though.

For bikeability, Dallas has to come in far below Phoenix. Walking to pick up the rental car (navigating back roads) and driving out of there, I only saw a couple of bikes, and it was the twitchy Wal*mart special deal, where they're trying to hide like cockroaches.

It does seem kind of silly in retrospect that we were worried about biking Bryan. Small towns tends tend to have lots of quiet roads with state highways in easy reach. I'm looking forward to hearing about your rides and wishing I could join you.
