Rejoining the developed world

As of yesterday afternoon, we have electricity and running water, meaning we've returned to the life of privilege enjoyed by so many people in developed countries. Hooray! On the other hand, we won't have gas restored to the house until Thursday morning, and our water heater is gas-powered, along with the range and oven. So I haven't been bathing as regularly as I probably should, and my espresso-making capabilities are severely limited.
Last night my cat reminded me of what it must be like for parents with small children, as she cried and cried and cried and kept me from sleeping. Of course, that was just one night, and eventually I was able to quiet her and get a bit of sleep. Parental types, my respect for you just grows and grows with the passage of time. I do hope she'll settle down soon, though perhaps she's unnerved by the sweet dog next door and her new boyfriend, a cat who decided to sit outside right in front of the screen door last night (the outrage!). Clearly Ms. Emma is not accustomed to so much open space, nor her proximity to our new neighbors.
