Sep. 14th, 2024 02:25 pmThe upside of having two drivers to drive across the country is that it's possible to keep the vehicle moving for longer each day, and the copilot can help with navigation logistics at stressful points like major urban areas.
A downside for me personally is that I can't read or do computer work in the car, so there are major limitations to what I can do when I'm a passenger. Basically, I can sit there, or I can sleep. Also, driving is enough of a multitasking activity that it's really all I can handle, especially with cats in the car.
So it can take a while to process things after traveling.
The day after we got here, S started to have a bad reaction to something at the house, so he had to pull the plug and left by train for California. Very frustrating after all the work that went into trying to get out here.
But here we are. Martha is adjusting well to the new environment. In general, she really likes exploring new spaces and new things, and she's willing to use me as her home base, so she seems pretty happy and settled in here already. George has kept himself on a night owl schedule. He has found somewhere safe and cozy for his daytime sleeping that I haven't been able to locate yet. But at night he's emerging and doing some tentative exploring and playing. This is all funny when you consider that he get so rambunctious at home that Martha can't handle it all.
I need to finish making extra scratching posts for them.
I also need to assemble the boat trailer, to get the trailer parts out of my mother's living room. And I need to figure out how to dispose of the voluminous trailer packaging. They got the parts to stay in place by adding some of that expanding foam to the boxes, but the expanding foam isn't at all recyclable and is far too bulky for disposal in my mother's microcube trash can. I kind of wish I could just mail it back to the trailer company.
The boatbuilding class starts on Monday.
The car will go in to have the shocks looked at on Tuesday morning bright and early. I want to get that started ASAP to have a chance of having it finished before the end of October.
UHaul has a great introductory video series on safe trailer driving, in case you ever need to learn a thing or two.
I walked around the Portage Bay loop yesterday, and encountered the parents of 2 sets of childhood friends.
One of the more amazing changes to the area where I grew up is that a street corner that used to be a major drug dealing site (23rd and Union), now has one of the local grocery co-op stores, and there are other good amenities like a post office and (local chain) pet supply store at the same corner. I signed up for the pet supply store rewards program, and then discovered they give your pets birthday presents during their birthday month, which is September for both George and Martha. The corner also has a pot dispensary, ha. That doesn't do me any good but I'm glad it's there for the people who want it.
This whole corner of businesses is a very easy/convenient bus ride from my mom's house, plus it's close to the YMCA where my mother goes for yoga 3 times a week. A good reminder of what high quality of life living conditions can look like, although we must note that this is in Seattle where housing costs are unaffordable for working-class folks.
