When I drove out to Arizona in 2021, I really didn't have a good concept of how far I might drive in a day, so I basically resorted to winging it, driving as far as I could manage, then searching for somewhere to stay. It's hard to search for somewhere to stay while driving, so I'm keen to avoid that experience again.

And now I have a better sense of what's a reasonable distance for me to drive in a day.

I have a preliminary plan in place for driving back to New York, which should take me 4 days.

New York to Seattle is a bit more complicated. I would anticipate that we will want to stop in Minneapolis, which makes it a little tricky to split up some of the distances between Albany and Minneapolis. I'm going to aim for Erie PA for day 1, because that's going to be a very busy day of figuring out how the cats are going to handle life in the car.

Erie all the way to Minneapolis is too far, so most likely it makes the most sense to devote most of day 2 just to managing the Chicago gauntlet, trying to emerge on the far side somewhere around Rockford. Rockford to Minneapolis would then be a shorter day.

After that we should probably plan on a day in the middle of North Dakota, then a day in the middle of Montana - Bozeman, maybe.

Bozeman to Seattle is very familiar territory. We grew up making that drive to visit my dad's family in Ennis.

So that's 5 nights and 6 days of driving.

Kind of exhausting just thinking about it.

The eventual return drive will be even more interesting, of course. I expect to scale back daily mileage ambitions due to boat hauling and winter weather. By then I should have a better sense of how well the cats travel, too.

Comments on preliminary driving plans are more than welcome. This ain't a Kerouac trip.
