This house in Tempe has two separate a/c units, one for either side. Friday night, the unit primarily responsible for cooling the side of the house where I am staying, decided to die and go home to Jesus. A repair person came by Saturday morning, but says it can take up to a week to actually obtain and install replacement units. Apparently companies and manufacturers are in the midst of transitioning to a new and different coolant type, due to changes in EPA standards, which complicates the process of getting things.

I am paying fairly close attention to my various temperature thresholds here. The threshold for being able to concentrate on academic work, is lower than my threshold for sleeping, and easier to find in public or commercial buildings than household ones. A good reason to adopt the plan of going somewhere to work every day.

I'd generally rather exercise outside in temperatures in up to the 80's (26-27 C), not the 90's (32 C), but I'll attempt to go rowing tomorrow morning. I am totally fine with riding my bike at cruising speeds for up to an hour or so up into the 110-degree range (that's 43 degrees C). It's definitely more pleasant to bike after the sun goes down, at least, or before it's up too high.

My recollection is that my upper comfort limit at home in the Farmer House was 85 degrees at night (29 C), 87 degrees during the day (30.5). But that was after 6 years to acclimate, and at a younger age. Those temperatures have surely slipped, but silly me, I did not bring along a basic thermometer to satisfy my curiosity.

Whenever nighttime temperatures climb above my nighttime tolerance, I wake up. That didn't happen Friday night, but happened last night, and persisted to the point where I jumped in the shower briefly. Sleep was so poor overall that I canceled plans to get up early and go floating with friends on the Salt River. Instead I am just drifting through the day, which does not seem ideal.

It's really important to find ways to be outside, this time of year, just as it's important to find ways to go outside in winter in the northern parts of the US.
