Basement life
Jun. 7th, 2024 03:09 pmDid you ever watch the Koren film Parasite when it came out? I remember the film making me so uneasy I was tempted to walk out of the theater multiple times, even though in the end I appreciated it for being that effective.
There are a lot of different names for dwelling spaces like the banjiha (half-basement apartments) in the film.
I guess what I am wondering is this: does it make sense that the floor of the building where I work is referred to as the basement? There's a sign that says so. Basement. But meanwhile, the button on the elevator says G, as in Ground Floor. I am wondering if the sign that says Basement is part of why so many people on this campus don't know anything about what happens on this floor of the building.
There can be some benefits to obscurity, of course.
It's hilarious that in other places, half-basement or ground floor apartments get called "garden level."
When pipes burst, we all know where the water goes.
