I was browsing the table of contents for the journal Science, when a subheading about a large-scale project caught my eye: is really true, did they name this thing the Extremely Large Telescope??
It turns out that yes, they did!
The article is pointing out that the USA is falling behind on its own telescope projects, whereas this European project is making better progress.
Meanwhile, the NYT is trying to get me to read an article about how the US is currently experiencing the consequences of disinvestment in long-term transportation planning projects (and more; note this is paywalled but strategic use of archive.org often helps if you're highly motivated).
There's a part of me that's super annoyed about this article, I think primarily because to me, this isn't new news, and it just doesn't feel like this kind of news story is likely to actually lead to meaningful changes in this arena.
But on the other hand, there DO need to be public conversations about this aspect of life in the United States if there is to be any hope of changed and improved circumstances.
Do you see reasons for hope, or some path for pushing for positive change? I'm still inclined to agree with the idea that hope is a crucial catalyst for getting people to take productive action.
