I was reading some inane article not too long ago about how people all have a limit to how much executive function we can engage in on any given day. That's the mental energy it takes to do things like decide which project to work on, figure out how to prioritize among competing tasks, etc. I don't know how much variation exists for this capacity, or whether there's anything a person can really do to change it. I DO know that coaching is personally costly in this regard, whereas rowing itself isn't. In any case, I've been operating close to my limit, which sucks, as I've whined about previously. People think they are sending a quick email, but every email and text message requires some of this executive function, too, and then it runs low and I fall further behind on manuscript writing, manuscript reviews, letters of recommendation, laundry, etc.

I got closure on that missing rent check. I put on the wrong address - 120 instead of 160. The postal service is fully absolved, and then some; I accept all responsibility. As for me, I will henceforth be paranoid about getting the landlord's address correct.
