Sump Pump

The remnants of Florence have arrived, so rowing practice was canceled and I finally have a chance to observe the basement's sump pump in action. I had to go down there no matter what because I had set a fan directly on the basement floor to facilitate drying, so I needed to move it to make sure it didn't wind up getting submerged. Fortunately when I went down there it was in a corner where the floor was still dry, phew.

A thing that makes me scratch my head a little is that water enters the basement on the south side, through a big, pipe-sized hole. It then crosses the floor and drains out via the sump pump hole. But why is there a giant water entry pipe in the basement? That just seems like an odd design. But on the other hand, maybe it's there to keep water from accumulating elsewhere around the outside perimeter of the house, where it could cause even more problems? Curious.
