Here's someone doing some cool insect photography these days: http://davidgarnick.photography/gallery/insecta/

The NYT had something the other day about how to manage stress like an Olympic Biathlete. This doesn't contain anything earth-shattering, but I found it inspiring to think about.

I just encountered this article on how faculty hiring committees reproduce Whiteness, and suggestions for changing that. I need to finish reading it, but it's important stuff to be thinking about.

What do you think about this notion of 'kind milk'? I guess I tend to get a bit worried about cases where well-meaning people who are outside of agriculture come in with certain assumptions about how things should get done, without appreciating the full story in terms of what they're talking about. On the other hand, this dairy seems to have developed an approach that seems like a positive direction.

What do you think about the disconnect between what we think is happening to the general human condition vs. what's actually happening? At least there's mention about the urgent need to address environmental impacts, at the end.

Dremel

This morning, Emma sat down in one of her favorite spots, with her butt right in front of a fan vent on [personal profile] scrottie's computer. So he picked her up to snuggle her. In the midst of that, I thought it would be a good idea to check on the state of her claws, which can be a tricky exercise for just one person because she REALLY doesn't like having her paws touched. Most of them are now looking pretty good, except for one that was still overgrown and on the verge of contacting her toe pad, which becomes painful.

S was concerned that trying to use claw clippers would split the nail, cause more trauma, and extend the problem, so we decided it was finally time to try the Dremel.

You should have seen how slippery Emma got the second I turned on the Dremel. However, after S managed to wrangle her back, we were able to make reasonable progress on the claw with the Dremel. And rest assured, Emma received a double cheese allotment at the end.
