Ach, the rowing
Sep. 6th, 2014 10:32 pmI am finally, finally reading The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown. It is satisfying to read a well-written story about the lives of rowers. But one of the most wonderful parts is the quotations at the beginning of every chapter, by George Yeoman Pocock, like this one, at the beginning of Chapter 4:
"It is hard to make that boat go as fast as you want to. The enemy, of course, is resistance of the water, as you have to displace the amount of water equal to the weight of men and equipment, but that very water is what supports you and that very enemy is your friend. So is life: the very problems you must overcome also support you and make you stronger in overcoming them."
I am going to wind up copying them all down somewhere. I am also going to wind up buying a copy of this book (current copy is from the library).
