Stuff and Things (somewhat literally)
Jan. 7th, 2013 05:36 pmThis morning, I packed up my computer and the handful of notebooks that go everywhere with me into a brand-new (to me) backpack. I finally decided it was time to bite the bullet on the backpack purchase over the holidays, after a couple of weeks of schlepping things around in an awkward, heavy pannier on the bus and when walking around (it's fantastic on the bike! Just not for traveling). The backpack had been on my List of Things to Acquire for several years now.
scrottie might recall me ogling this pack a couple years back on that day we went on a grand adventure around the Phoenix Mountain Preserves and stopped at the Paradise Valley REI. Or perhaps he doesn't - I don't know why it would stick out, really.
The last couple of times I've visited REIs, I haven't been able to find this particular brand and model of pack, so instead I went off in search of it on eBay, found one, and clicked the "Buy Instantly" button.
This backpack's predecessor was used by the burglar(s) who broke into the Farmer House, to carry off my old laptop and my roommate's laptop, so finally obtaining a replacement brings me a bit of closure. Between then and now, I've learned to shop for used electronics. The burglars also made off with both a broken iPod Nano and broken camera - joke was on them! I replaced the burgled laptop with a used laptop (now getting to be the worse for wear, a couple years later), and replaced the broken, burgled camera with a used eBay camera of the same model. There was an in-between camera, but I dropped it and it died instantly. Amazingly, the used eBay camera has survived multiple falls, and has the added advantage of me knowing how to use it reasonably well.
Just now I have finally tracked down the cheap folding headphones that were in the burgled pack on Amazon, so I might get those again, too. And perhaps the stolen Leatherman, also. It was handy and I used it frequently, but expensive enough to make me think twice about buying a replacement.

On Friday, I encountered a link to a website outlining a process for making 52 changes over the course of 2013. This instantly makes me think of a picture S posted recently from imgur: http://imgur.com/r/pics/x7hYF
Once I recovered from thoughts inspired by that picture, I was still curious about things on the list of 52 changes, so I scrolled down to examine the Table of Contents. Out of all of the things, the very last one has stuck: "Realize you're not missing out." An idea I'm going to turn over in my mind for a while. For me, I think it means to keep focusing on the stuff in front of me that I can do: pushing forward on projects at work, biking out to the lake to row, gardening, cooking, craft projects. Sounds like a good agenda for 2013.
