Someone special gave me an amazing early birthday gift, that makes me smile every time I think about it: a satsuma tree. I wish I could instantly, confidently, plunge its roots into the ground. Not in Texas, though. Where, exactly, well, I still don't know. The thought, however, of doing so, the hope, the goal - I'll hold on to that. I need to narrow down the "where." In the meantime, I'll put some containers together and will see about growing some more tomatoes around here.

On Tuesday evening, I attended the university's Crew Interest Meeting, the meeting where the team leaders work to recruit new people to the fine sport of rowing. I think there were around 60 people at the meeting. The A&M team is run as a student organization, and apparently just got recognized as a Rec Sport this past year. I believe that the entire team leadership is composed of students, including the coach, who is also relatively new to the sport. At the meeting, I learned that the note I left on the boatyard fence was, in fact, found, read, and discussed, but apparently the person who was supposed to get in touch with me just never did. I can easily understand how this kind of thing could have happened, now that I know more about the nature of the organization.

So, I introduced myself to a couple of key people, got my name on at least one e-mail list, and will meet up with folks to head over to the lake on Saturday, during their first learn-to-row session. It's going to be tricky to figure out how to integrate myself with this group. I explained to the coach that ideally, I'd just like to scull, but that I would also like to give back to the program in whatever ways I can, whether it's coaching/running practices or helping elsewhere. It always takes time to figure that out, though. The team is struggling the most with very high turnover rates, which is unsurprising for a program of its sort. Given that it's a student-run operation, I really, really don't want to step on anyone's toes in any way, shape, or form.

At the meeting, the team leaders gave us the practice schedule, so my next job will be to figure out which practices I'd prefer to attend, and track down a consistent ride out to the lake. Finding a ride is so much easier when one actually knows who to talk to about it, let me tell you.
