I find it difficult to concentrate when I am either too warm or too cold. Here are two recent stories about thermoregulatory efforts:

When the Gas Man came to turn on my gas, he asked about heating. After taking a look around the place, he concluded that I did not have a furnace or any form of central heating. I was skeptical, but figured I'd take his word for it for the time being. After all, it was warm at that point. Fast-forward to yesterday. [livejournal.com profile] scrottie arrived yesterday afternoon, after a long Amtrak trip and miscellaneous adventures associated with the fact that the train was late. Yesterday, temperatures here started to drop, with a forecast low below freezing, so I pulled in all of the frost-sensitive plants (tomatoes, eggplants, basil, lemon tree). S hung out with Emma for the afternoon, while I wrapped up projects on campus and put in my daily erg meters. Emma has become a heat-seeking missile in the cold weather. She yelled at me the other day because she couldn't find a warm spot to curl up during the day. By the time I got home, it was 48 degrees in the house, so I figured I might as well try turning on the heat, as the thermostat had both heating and cooling settings. Luckily for us and miss Emma, it turns out the heat *does* work. So, I don't have to rush out and buy a space heater.

My desk at school is next to a drafty window. Apparently, the last occupant, also a postdoc, was known to complain about the cold temperatures in this spot. Apparently he also once took a thermometer over here to measure the temperatures, and found that this spot was fifty degrees. Cold and drafty. Yesterday, I wore a wool thermal shirt, t-shirt, and wool jacket while sitting at my desk. My legs got very cold, and my hands were cold enough that it was difficult to type. Today, I am wearing a wool hat, the wool jacket, and tights under my pants. My ankles and feet are still cold. I've been drinking tea and hot chocolate, too. I suppose I'll have to wear wool socks or leg-warmers tomorrow. More than anything, I need to be able to switch to working from home when I have to sit at the computer for long periods.
