Boy. Weekends in Texas have been busy, overall, as I work away at projects that I cannot work on during the week. This weekend, in Arizona, has been pretty different, probably because I didn't bring those doors along with me, so I can't spend the entire weekend stripping the rest of the paint off of them. They can wait, though.

Instead, on Saturday, S and I slept in, and then after we finally got up I made some scones and lemon curd for breakfast. I've had two errands on my list for my time in AZ: a trip over to Tempe Yarn and Fiber for some yarn for a bike seat cover, and a trip over to Penzey's for a couple of spices (namely, almond extract and vegetable bullion). I managed to grab the yarn on Friday night, so that just left the Penzey's expedition for Saturday.

Oh, I have to backtrack for a minute, here. Friday night was a riot. It was the night of the TBAG Third Fridays ride, which was themed as a Harvest Ride. At our first stop, a couple of people joined our party: they had pedaled a bike-car over to the bar. During the Tour de Fat, this bike-car had hauled a drummer + drumset on the parade. This time around, they put a la-z-boy recliner on the back. The only downside to this bike-car is its weight, so people took turns pedaling it around. Still, instant party. On the expedition between the first and second stops of the ride, I pinch-flatted. At that time, my friend J was helping to pedal the bike-car, so his folding fixed-gear bike was stashed on the platform between the car seats and the recliner. When we reached a traffic light and I pointed out my flat tire, we quickly swapped out J's bike with mine for the rest of the ride. Then the light changed green and I had to start pedaling, just as I looked down and discovered that J's bike only had one pedal! In this case, it was quite useful that his bike was a fixed-gear, as that made it much easier to pedal one-legged. Overall, I was glad that we only had another 3/4-mile to go to our next stop.

When we reached that stop, a quick survey of the masses revealed that nobody happened to have a spare 26" tube with them, so I made arrangements to help pedal the car-bike back up towards RG and JG's house, where I could pick up a tube. Boy was that a workout, especially given that my co-pilot was ragingly tipsy and shouting all kinds of entertaining things.

Anyway, back to Saturday. The intensive Friday night pedaling caused me to whine about the state of my legs to [livejournal.com profile] scrottie, so he proposed that we take his motorcycle over to Penzey's instead of biking all the way to Tempe for a single errand. So that was my first experience on the back of a motorcycle. I prefer bicycles, but I consider motorcycles to be slightly less evil than cars, because at least on a motorcycle one has a better sense of how fast one is traveling, and no illusions of safety. Plus, better gas mileage for single or dual-passenger situations.

That errand accomplished, we returned back to the homestead for some delicious dinner (vegetarian Reuben sandwiches - basically an excuse to eat cheese and sauerkraut - plus zucchini fritters), and then set out to check out Film Bar in downtown Phoenix.

Film Bar...I've been wanting to pay them a visit ever since I learned that they had opened. What a phenomenal venue. The name pretty much says it all, but doesn't tell you that one of the local music stores around here supplies them with good, hip music. The film that we saw, well. The synopsis made it sound like a skateboarding movie, and that's exactly what it was. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're into skateboarding movies.

Today, I have mostly lazed about and spent time reading about building furniture out of pallet wood. Because, you know, if I can't actually work on the doors I might as well work on plotting and scheming for the next steps. Once the doors are ship-shape, I'll need to acquire a second filing cabinet for the desk, and then I'll turn to the next pair of projects: bookshelves, and a countertop table with a shelf underneath it for the space next to the stove. I'm looking at something like this for the kitchen countertop table. I've seen a lot of stacks of pallets around town, which will hopefully yield some good, cheap building materials.
