I am currently at the Bryan Public Library. I just got a library card, and they have free wifi, hooray! They're open every day of the week, though they will close at 5:30 pm today. I have to hit the road pretty soon, anyway, to make it to dinner with some bike people, but limited Sunday hours is so much better than zero Sunday hours. I won't have time to peruse the inventory today, but I will definitely be doing so soon.

Backtracking. There was a departmental barbecue on Friday that felt like a family picnic, except without the family element, so I felt out of place. I tried to go to bed reasonably early, because on Saturday C and I planned to drive out to the Tour de Fat in Austin. I went to bed at 10:30, but woke up at 2:30 because I could hear two men talking and rustling in the bushes somewhere outside of my bedroom window. There were also various thumps and other suspicious noises that sounded like some sort of break-in. My window was open, with only a flimsy screen separating me from whoever they were. So I grabbed my cell phone and went into the kitchen and called 911, and stayed away from the windows while waiting to see what would happen. By the time an officer came over to talk to me, the suspicious men had left. The officer said he'd talked to them and they were from the same family that had tried living there - they had just been continuing to work on moving out. But seriously, people? At 3 in the morning on a Friday night/Saturday morning? The officer said I did the right thing to call. It was very hard to fall asleep after that.

So, C and I did make it to the Austin Tour de Fat yesterday. It was fun, but kind of strange to be there only as a participant and not a volunteer. The crowd was only about one-tenth of the size of the crowd in Tempe, but that meant the atmosphere was much more laid-back and pleasant. I wore my TBAG shirt, but only one person came up to me to ask about it - a guy from Flagstaff who was back in Texas visiting his family. There was only one pennyfarthing and no tallbikes in the parade. No four-wheeled bikes, either. Austin is all right. i can see how it would be fun to live there, and i am sure I'll go over occasionally for various events, but honestly I think Tempe is way, way better. I took a few photos, which i'll try to post tomorrow.

Today, I mostly worked on projects around the house. I'm constructing a hummingbird feeder out of materials that i have on hand or can scavenge for free. It's almost finished. I'll take photos when it's set up. I made it to provide Emma with some entertainment - she seems kind of lonely.
