Still too much going on these days
Jul. 4th, 2011 02:54 pmIt's kind of hard to focus on all of the dissertation revisions I need to do. There is so much going on, and things aren't all that simple to explain. I've been trying to get in a lot of bike rides in preparation for the Paris-Brest-Paris, which is approaching quickly in August. Along with that, we are trying to straighten out some of the details for the trip. The first big detail for me is that I will be flying in to Boston a few days ahead of my departure for Europe. Time to visit folks in New England, whee! Another detail is how to ship my bicycle over to Europe. I've tracked down a hard-sided plastic case for it, but still need to go over and make the purchase. Then there are a bunch of fiddly little details: how to organize my luggage, learning about the route, et cetera. Those are kind of fun, though.
In other, completely unrelated news, yesterday I learned that members of my lab were in a bad accident while driving back from California. All of the people are relatively unharmed, aside from whiplash and bruising, but our lab's truck is totaled. The ants which they went out to collect also survived, but the pies they were bringing back did not. I'm incredibly grateful that they were all okay, and am absolutely pissed off about the person who hit them. Drunk driver, traveling too fast, rear-ended them on the highway. He is now in jail. Our lab truck is no small vehicle - it's an F250, so the other car must have been big and hit them pretty hard. Again, it was kind of a miracle that everyone is relatively unharmed (though whiplash and bruising are no small matter). In case there has ever been any question in your mind, do.not.ever. drive when you have ANY question about your level of impairment.
And in other, other news, I got a phone call from my mother this morning, saying that my sister-in-law had her water break this morning. My new nephew is going to be about 4 weeks premature, looks like - they will probably induce labor pretty soon. So many baby stories these days!
Oh yeah, and there's still this whole business about figuring out my future life in Texas.
