List of Things to Acquire
Aug. 24th, 2010 12:00 pmI'm partway through the project of processing and uploading photos from the trip to northern Europe, plus the brevet last weekend, but I don't feel like I can justify finishing the project today. I should be doing more science. So instead, I present to you, part of my List of Things to Acquire. I have found that keeping such a list is extraordinarily useful, because it gives me time to think about and strategize about the material goods that flow in and out of my life. At the moment, I have to wait until my finances are a bit more settled (aka ASU gives me my money back) before I can plan out when to purchase things, but I might as well write about them. I should update the paper list as well, but for now, here are the things that are kind of high on my radar:
1. New bike shoes: My old bike shoes have reached the point where they're offensively stinky and are just about to require duct tape if I want them to stay closed. I haven't purchased *any* new shoes, biking or otherwise, in a couple of years, now, which is kind of amazing in and of itself. You really can tell a lot about a person's financial situation and inclinations by studying their footwear. I wear my bike shoes more than any other pair of shoes I own, so I have strict requirements for a replacement pair: they must be extremely durable, reasonably comfortable for walking around (i.e. mountain bike style with recessed cleats), and reasonably priced (I'm a grad student, after all).
2. Software for The Dissertator (that's the new computer): I would like to locate a "prior version" copy of the Adobe software package because I have found it to be incredibly useful on the school computer. I don't need the latest and greatest because I'm not a designer. I also need to purchase or acquire something that will let me work on Microsoft files. Most likely it will have to be a Microsoft product, because I'm not ready to wrestle with compatibility issues with the files I've got at the moment. I don't want to deal with Vista, either.
3. A trip to the dentist: I haven't been to the dentist in an embarrassingly (and unhealthily) long time.
4. Storage devices: Our house is overflowing with piles of bottles and jars, and I have piles of papers and tools that could use a little more organization as well. I might even (gasp) go to IKEA to pick up some storage devices. Ideally, I'd want extremely durable containers, not flimsy plastic or cardboard. Things that could double as shipping containers. Steamer trunks, perhaps.
