What a day.
Jun. 3rd, 2010 02:06 pmThis has been quite the week. Yesterday, I finally got my teaching situation squared away. Today, well. It started with an early morning, going sculling with my friend A and with
scrottie. It has been a while since I've had a chance to row with someone other than K, and it's nice to mix things up a bit. Newer rowers always have a fresh sense of adventure, and it was really nice to finally have a chance to teach some of the basics to S.
Then it was home again, for some breakfast and a shower before heading in to attend the class I'm TAing, genetics. The professor was great at providing clear explanations, and we had some fun with basic inheritance challenge problems. Oh, but before I reached campus for the class, something exciting happened. Right as S and I pulled out of the driveway, we glanced across the street and noticed a piano sitting there, with a For Sale sign on it. The price and location were right, so I called up the number and made arrangements to pay for the thing. I even managed to locate some moving dollies to move it. So as soon as the class ended, I headed home with the moving dollies, and met up with the guy selling the piano. He and his soon-to-be-former landlord were a tremendous help with moving it across the street.
Once we got it on the dollies, we only had to deal with four elevation changes: the sloped curb on his side of the street, the sloped curb on my side of the street, the step up to my front porch, and the doorjamb into the house.
Three of the four slopes went smoothly, with the aid of a piece of 0.75-inch plywood I'd been hoarding. The doorjamb was a little more interesting, but we managed to figure it out and got it in the house. Now I just hope the floors hold up. It's heavy. It's a piano that has seen better days, but it also hasn't been abused.
I'm going to be really sore tomorrow.
