Back to life, back to reality...
Oct. 19th, 2009 08:36 pmWell, I have returned. It's extremely odd to travel from Australia back to the US, because I arrived in Phoenix before I left Sydney (left at 2:20 pm, arrived at 1:30 pm). But I seem to recall several hours of eating, sleeping, and sitting on an airplane between those two times.
I spent this afternoon frantically grading, and tomorrow morning I'll take the kiddos (err, students) over to A Mountain to check out some plant distributions, which should be fun. I wish I could pick up a good Aussie accent for this lab, but oh well. Somehow it's strange to not be surrounded by people with funny accents.
I have a couple of other subjects I'm hoping to write about, although I have a feeling I'm going to get sidetracked before that happens. The subjects include commentary about styles of traveling, about types of markets, and some more random observations about Australians. Bike culture in Sydney appears to be a kind of peculiar beast, for example. I didn't see many fixed-gears in the first couple of days of touring about, but saw many more on the last morning when I walked up near the University of Sydney.
Oh, also, for the record, it was fun to be in a city full of public art. This place is sadly lacking.
Anyway, hopefully I will be able to go to sleep now and will be able to get up in the morning and be coherent for teaching. We shall see.
