Slim silver linings
Jun. 8th, 2009 11:49 amThis morning I had a chance to check my external hard drive (kept in a separate location at school), and found that my most recent backup was slightly more recent than I'd feared, early March. Still not great, but at least all of the critical files and data can be recovered without months of work. More like days of work. I keep on thinking about my undergraduate Animal Behavior professor, who lost some 30 years worth of data when the biology building burned to the ground in 1975. They were film strips, and at first he said he started going crazy, trying to re-collect all of the old data, before he realized it was a futile endeavour and he'd have to just re-focus his energies instead. The worst part of all of this is that my data are invaluable to me (and others who understand what they mean), but are worthless garbage to a junkie trying to get enough stuff fenced for a quick hit.
I have been fairly diligent about keeping my personal information secure as well, although I'll be paranoid about it just to be on the safe side--I set up my web browser clear all cookies and stored information every time I quit out of it, and never have it remember any passwords. At worst, I left cryptic hints to myself about what passwords are used where.
So really, the biggest loss is financial. I wasn't planning on buying a new computer for another six months at the very earliest, especially in light of traveling to Australia and my reduced summer income. Fortunately, my advisor has access to a laptop that I can use in the meantime.
I also went over to the gym and erged this morning. So far, I feel fine. I had to pause about ten minutes in to stretch a little, which was to be expected. One of the sources of the kind of injury that I have comes from not warming up properly. I think it really helped that I got a break from sitting at a desk/lab bench over the weekend.
