My mom's side of the family has strong family ties in Enumclaw, where my mother grew up and my grandfather as well. The family gathers together at least two times a year, once in the summer to celebrate my grandfather's birthday, and once in the winter to celebrate Christmas (some also gather for Thanksgiving). I don't know too many of my extended relatives all that well, so these gatherings have always been a bit awkward. The Christmas party is quite Danish, and recently it has been held in the Danish Brotherhood hall.

My grandfather's side of the family always has a gathering the Sunday before Christmas. This year, the gathering was postponed until the Sunday after Christmas due to all of the snow. We all hold hands and sing carols while dancing (well, walking) around the Christmas tree, and then eat open-faced sandwiches and other traditional Danish holiday foods.

My mom grew up on a small farm with chickens, though the farm wasn't the main source of income for the family. I spent a lot of time in the Chicken House (name of the barn) as a kid, playing hide-and-go-seek and exploring through piles of dusty things. My grandfather is the sort of person who never throws anything out, and over the years various relatives have stored belongings in different parts of the Chicken House, or have lived in the one inhabitable section, filling the barn with relics. This year, I took a closer look at the bicycles in the barn. I don't know what will happen to them in the long run; I think our family thinks of the farmstead as a family establishment and isn't ready to think about it.
