Time to plant and grow things
Sep. 1st, 2008 03:06 pmThere was a hint of cooler weather in the air today. Instead of feeling like an intolerably hot furnace, it felt rather warm and damp. Some day, it might be cool enough to open the windows all day long.
My planting calendar indicates that mid- to late-September is the best time to plant a lot of the vegetables I want to try and grow. It will sound strange to many of you, but I'll be trying to get artichokes, beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, and leeks started soon. I just put in an order to Seed Savers Exchange to try some things out. Next weekend, in my allotted "free time" (which I give to myself), I will work on preparing the garden beds, pulling out the bermudagrass, fixing the fallen fencing, and loosening up the rich soil. If I'm feeling really ambitious, I'll work on developing an herb garden area as well. But chances are that I'll need to devote more time to mowing the grass instead.
