Stomping Grounds
Jul. 29th, 2007 06:17 pmWell, I'm back in the Greater Phoenix Suburbopolitan Area, after a bit of a delay. My flight home was cancelled yesterday due to inclement weather in New York--I'd forgotten how crazy traveling gets in New England. I'd really been looking forward to being home, but the adventures involved in getting here have dampened my enthusiasm just a bit. You see, I managed to set my alarm clock for 4:30 pm instead of am, so I woke up rather abruptly when the taxi dispatcher called to confirm that I did, indeed, want a taxi at 5 am. Fastest dresser in the west, yo.
Then I think I didn't eat enough food while traveling and thus developed a massive headache towards the end of my second flight. Most of the afternoon has involved trying to undo the headache (food, water, meds), and then getting my cat resettled (she's catching me up on all of the cat gossip that I have missed, by which I mean she's meowly), and then buying a monstrous quantity of groceries. The trailer was full.
My extra day in Boston (or, more precisely, Somerville), was quite nice. I spent the morning in a new coffeeshop in Ball Square, True Grounds, drinking some pretty good espresso and eating some delicious goodies. If I were to resettle in Somerville, that would become my new haunt, my replacement for the Someday Cafe. I love it when a place takes familiar foods and then makes them with their own signature style. In this case, the foods were scrumptious scones and sandwiches. They even had whole-wheat sourdough bread! Then I spent time sitting on J and S's porch (the downstairs one), reading and writing and watching thunderstorms roll through and thinking about the countless hours I have spent in that space between those two houses, 89 Bromfield and 90 Bromfield, looking at those same houses and same trees as my thoughts and the seasons slowly revolved. I feel like such a different person than I was those four years ago. Later, I briefly visited Tisch Library and then Diesel (M's favorite coffeeshop) and had a delectable latte. And then I spent the evening with J and A. My social circle in Boston is small, now, but I'm so grateful for it because those years were important ones.
