A nice row in the morning
Apr. 20th, 2007 08:18 amLast night marked the end of an extended hectic stretch at school. Things aren't really slowing down yet, but I might at least have time to clean my house and unclog my bathtub this weekend. That would be nice. I do not enjoy living in squalor. I might even try to make some progress on certain home-improvement projects (bike-hanging pulley systems, for instance).
This morning K and I took out a double and went for a spin around the lake. I made us get back in the single on Monday and Tuesday, but figured we could reward ourselves with some time in the double this morning. We also both need to get our heads back into sculling and sprint racing mode, so we did some starts and 500-m pieces. They would have been do-able in singles, but not quite as much fun. I think K is struggling a little bit more to readjust than I am, but she's a capable rower so she'll be fine. This morning highlighted the fact that we need to get our training plan reestablished--we've been just showing up and doing whatever the City coaches want us to do for a while, but it's not helping me prepare effectively to race.
Our row wasn't all that great from a technical perspective, but we both had fun taking the rating and speed up and getting into racing mode. Rowing with K brings out some interesting aspects of our individual personalities, which is useful to see. We're both perfectionists and control freaks, but we express those tendencies in different ways: in the same situations, K likes to chomp at the bit while I'm a bit balky. (I like the long, low stroke ratings, while K is the master of quickness). I think we both recognize that the ideal approach would be a happy medium, but of course it takes practice to get there. In any event, it's good to see what happens when we try to take the intensity up.
