This morning I got up and rode my bicycle up to the top of South Mountain and then along another road with a bunch of the People of the People's Ride (when we did the Tour de Scottsdale last weekend, people kept asking us if we were a team. In some respects, I suppose we are). It was a 47-mile bike ride altogether. It wore me out a bit, but I made pancakes and took a brief nap before setting out to run errands. The food co-op where I have bought groceries for the past three years has just moved to a new location, so I set out to visit it. When I got there, I had a conversation about existentialism, ran into K, and gave somebody my phone number. Quite an eventful little trip.
Then I headed over to Tempe Sales to find material for my Halloween costume. I'll definitely have to take pictures when it's fully assembled. Tempe Sales is one of those places that has all of the assorted random materials a person needs to upholster chairs or assemble window blinds or add tassels to anything. It was my first time there, but I know I'll be going back. A pretty spectacular store.
After that, I headed over to the Tour de Fat, a bike/beer event put on by the New Belgium brewing company. This is the sort of event that features every kind of hipster bicycle imaginable: ones with big, fat tires; ones with twice as many spokes as necessary (if not more); cruisers galore (even tandem cruisers); low-riders; super-tall bikes; etc. etc. I regretted not bringing my camera. The assorted costumes were almost better than the bikes (apparently hipsterism and pirates go hand-in-hand), except for the guy in the sumo diaper. I have to wonder where all of the people came from--I recognized a face here and there, but I was so happy to have so many interesting people to people-watch. It was fun, but after a beer I was wiped out, so I came home and made a big old batch of chili and cornbread. The chili is really just an excuse to eat massive quantities of cornbread. But it was delicious and simple and hearty.
Now I'm making cupcakes for a potluck tomorrow. Tomorrow morning I'll ride my bike in the Tour de Tempe (I'll be bringing my camera this time), and then I'll head over to a state park to go hiking and hang out with the social insect people. Another busy day.
But for the moment, I think I'll curl up and work on reading White Teeth. So far it has been fantastically good.
