Well, I biked to
Lulu's Cupcakes with KD this afternoon, and the verdict is...
...meh.
I think the illustration on the website says a lot: too much frosting, not enough delicious cupcakey goodness. And I'm not sure, but I think the frosting wasn't quite perfected. It might have been kept at a slightly too-warm temperature, or the ratios might have been a little bit off. I'm not entirely sure.
The worst part is that this is their second week in business, and we were pretty much the only people there, so the cashier asked, "Well, what do you think?" and I had to go and give her my honest opinion. I just don't know when to keep my mouth closed sometimes.
That's the second time I've felt like a serious food snob in the past while. The first time was at 3 Roots a few weeks ago, when I badmouthed their espresso in front of one of the baristas. I *did* say that they have the best espresso in the Mill Ave area, which is true. But I have a really hard time praising mediocre quality to the skies. I just can't do it. And why should I? If I want mediocre, I have a hundred different choices around here. Hell, Starbucks makes a perfectly mediocre latte. But if I want really, really good food, I have next to nothing to choose from around here--there's only a handful of small, expensive shops near downtown Phoenix that carry the good stuff. I sincerely believe that if a local business around here wants to succeed, they only have to go a step up in quality and they would gain an incredible customer base.
And I understand that working in the service sector is hard. You can't please everybody. I can find elements to praise, but again, I think a sign of a good business is its drive towards self-improvement, and that attitude seems to be lacking around here.
Someone said to me a while ago that the thing they disliked the most about this area was how half-assed everything was. They were so right.
