Not much else happened yesterday.

I made peanut sauce, and then I ate it.

I started reading The Geography of Nowhere, by James Howard Kunstler. I might not be in the right mood to read it, but hopefully it will be interesting. Finding the book required a trip to the Architecture Library, which I had never visited before. The library was kind of hard to find because there were no exterior markings on the Architecture buildings to indicate "This Way to Library!" and there are north and south buildings and I inevitably ended up in the wrong one. Once I found the library, however, I found it to be quite nice. I might have to sneak over there to do some reading. Of course it was a nice building. It had better be. That's where the architects live.

I find modern architecture incoherent. Occasionally, I come across things I like, like the Phoenix Public Library. More often, I encounter structures that are aesthetically pleasing from the exterior but that fail functionally in their interior design. Apparently the reason the building I work in has such a terrible interior design is because "that's how everybody is building lab spaces these days," with no regard given to the fact that it's utterly impossible to get work done in these damn cubicles. Architects need to visit buildings they have designed one year, five years, ten years, and twenty years after they have been built, to see how the spaces are used, and to see what has lasted and what has been modified.

S and I had a discussion on our thirst for unique architecture in housing as well--she and her fiance relocated because they couldn't stand life in a homogenous neighborhood.

The Complete Encyclopedia of Stitchery rocks. I am working on getting started on a skirt-making project, but I was having a hard time figuring out what sorts of stitches to use--I have no sewing machine, so the skirts (2) will be hand-sewn. Then it occurred to me to check in the Encyclopedia. Everything I need to know is in there, clearly illustrated and explained.

Life is good.

Now I just need to figure out how to cut the fabric. Heh. I want to base the skirts on a skirt I already have, so it's a simple matter of carefully tracing some shapes. I really hope this project succeeds, because if it does, I will be the Queen of Awesome Skirts.
