Even in Kyoto

One of the things that I find marvelous about traveling alongside the canal(either by car or bike) is that for about the western two-thirds of it you're staying in one geologic province, and crossing along time instead of back or forward through time. It's these flat-lying rocks which allow for topography amenable to a canal.
