Photos: Halloween and Odds and Ends

I forgot to mention something. Over the weekend, I finally cracked open a second melon that I'd purchased from the farmer's market a week prior. When I told the Aggie Horticulture guy that I'd enjoyed the previous melons, he suggested that I set down the cantaloupe I was about to buy in favor of an Israeli melon that he promised would be even more delicious. Well. Was he ever right. I think that was the best melon I've ever had in my life.

Last night, I opened up the boxes of books in the living room and arranged the books along the floor. I also pulled out about 20 books to get rid of, and put them in a pile along with a few other items, including some miscellaneous ceramics. I'll take a photo of the ceramic items in the next couple of days in the event that any of you would like them. There are a couple of teacups and a berry bowl/colander in there. Next, I need to open up the boxes of academic books, and then start going through the boxes and boxes of academic papers. You're envious, I can tell.

I also managed to haul myself out of bed this morning at 5:30 to complete a couple rounds of body circuits (you know, sit-ups, pushups, jumpies, et cetera). Body circuits tend to provide me with pretty instant feedback on how out of shape I am. If I can motivate myself to get up at 5 tomorrow, I'll bike out to Lake Bryan to see what's going on out there, if anything. I need to get a membership to the rec center, here. I might be erging for a long time before I can get back on the water, but I need to do something to keep from getting too depressed. I'm thinking I'll wind up doing body circuits twice a week in the mornings, and then if there isn't any activity at the lake I'll erg three times a week in the afternoon right as I finish up work. My labmate M also had a good suggestion - to check Netflix for fun/interesting/weird/diverting exercise DVDs, which I can use to mix up the body circuits.

kitty-cats love to help with sewing projects.
Miss Emma was excited to help me with sewing the costume. Or maybe she was just intrigued by stuff sliding along the fabric.
Lovely plumage Super chicken!
Some lovely plumage, there.Super Chicken!

Do you have any idea what this strange fruit is? I couldn't quite catch the name. Tasted all right, I guess.Delicious pizza with roasted squash, smoked mozzarella, apples, and sage-walnut pesto.

Another week, another (semi-successful) loaf of bread...

Your weird fruit looks like it might be some kind of passion fruit.

One of my Hebrew school teachers once told us a story of when he was at a market in Israel. He was at a booth that sold melons of all sorts - blue and pink and green, striped and spotted. He chose one then asked the stall owner, "What kidn of melon is this?" expcting a name, like cataloupe or honeydew (or the Hebrew equivalent). The stall owner said, "Zeh melon!" _ "It's a melon!" Apparently they don't differentiate quite so precisely there.

that's true

we just call them melon. sometimes we add the color to better describe them (green melon, orange melon, etc.)

Rebecca - that's an awesome chicken costume. Love the choice of socks!

Thank you, miss D! I would have called this one a delicious green melon. :-)

What a cute story. I'd call the one I ate a DELICIOUS melon, and I'm hoping that some of the seeds eventually sprout and grow into melon plants in my backyard. :-)

I am fairly certain that I will be wearing it and dancing in it again in the future. I need to make a couple of modifications to the wings so I can wear the outfit without safety-pinning the wings to the sweater. The sweater made it too hot for dancing, and while I like the element the sweater adds to the outfit, I could imagine some alternative outfits as well.

I really want to just randomly ride around on my bike while wearing this outfit. SuperChicken to the rescue! Mostly because I want to see how other people react to it. There's also the BikeSnobNYC element to consider (he spent a while talking about riding his bike around in a chicken suit).

spikey fruit

I think that is the same sort of bright spikey outside freaky green inside fruit that I found at a supermarket when I was a kid and made my mom buy. 'course, you can't tell that it is freaky green from the outside, only that it is freaky bright and freaky spikey. Somewhat sweet iirc?

The guy I bought it from described it as having a flavor somewhere between a kiwi, a cucumber, and a banana, and he wasn't too far off the mark! I found it to be a bit sweet and a bit tangy - not bad, overall, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to find and eat them in the future. It was fun to try, though - I like to encourage gardeners who try out weird/exotic stuff.
