Up and at 'em

6:30 am: Alarm goes off, awakening me from some strange dream. I get dressed, make coffee and oatmeal, eat breakfast, make a sandwich for lunch, pack a few things on Froinlavin, and head out the door.

7:50 am: I stop by the farmer's market and buy a dozen eggs. It's cold (for Texas), right above freezing. I chat for a minute with the jam lady, then I'm off again.

On Tuesday morning, I'd told the rowers I would come and help out at Learn-to-Row. But that would conflict with plans to get in a long bike ride, so instead I took the long route to the lake, through Aggieland Traditions (wealthy housing development west of town with pretty swooping hills), past the Smetana convenience store. I popped out less than a quarter of a mile away from the entrance to the lake. The ride was great, except for the lack of feeling in my feet and the fact that I was a half-hour late.

It was still good to hang out with everyone and spend some time by the lake, even in the cold. Perhaps it's not cold by northerly standards, but I don't think rowers up north wade into water that cold, either. Hard to say no to rowing this spring, but I'm not very good at getting myself to sit down and write, and that's what I really need to be doing these days.

I retraced my steps for the return trip, and got in a total of 42 miles on Froinlavin. As soon as I got home, I swapped things back onto the Jolly Roger and set out for Brazos Natural Foods. That loop finished, I sorted through all of the recyclables, smashed a bunch of cans and plastic containers, loaded up the bike trailer, and rode over to drop them off and get a few more things at Village Foods.

Once I got home again, I dropped everything off and rode over to the HEB for the last couple of items on the grocery list. Twelve more miles on the Jolly Roger. A 54-mile day running errands is all right.

After four grocery-getting stops, I was finally finished, and settled in to cook for a bit: some lentil-pecan pate (Cafe Flora Cookbook), and an enormous vat of Russian Cabbage Borscht, out of the Moosewood Cookbook:
Russian Cabbage Borscht

Tomorrow morning at 6:45, I'll ride down to the Prosperity Bank on Rock Prairie Road to find out about the "Banker's Ride." After that, maybe a spot of brunch, and a bit of crafting. If I keep busy maybe I won't notice how quiet it is without [livejournal.com profile] scrottie here.
