Sorry to hear about your father's accident and glad that he will be OK. Had one myself this past winter when a bike rider alongside me unexpectedly turned immediately into me without warning. Luckily just road rash. Here's a recent interesting link that makes the case for cycling being much safer than cars although some of the math might be a stretch.
