Washing Machine

I'm on the cusp of one of those rare opportunities, a chance to purchase a washing machine. Trouble is, my knowledge of what would be ideal is limited.

My aspirations: something water- and energy-efficient, so probably front-loading. Also, not super-pricey (let's say, under $600). Appearance is immaterial.

Ideas?
