Day 1 Notes
Jun. 9th, 2021 01:21 amOfficially left at 11 am from campus; can of stove fuel at home was empty so I had to go in to campus to pick up a can of stove fuel there. Used the Bossy Lady for routing.
Need to check in with Uncle D about tolls and obtain an E-Z Pass. Hope I remember.
Made it ~646 miles, just past Columbus. New Smart-o-Phone battery lasted until around 7 pm and then I don't know what went wrong but it wouldn't charge. It is charging now in a hotel room (one of those times when all the amenities wind up being 100% worth it, especially the phone, given that I didn't include Ohio in my travel list).
Cleaned the fridge of EVERYTHING except 1 tub of yogurt. That might be interesting in 2 months' time. Nancy's yogurt, with live/active cultures. Everything else fit perfectly in the cooler, and so far the cooler is doing wonderfully.
I had most of a head of cabbage, so I made a quick slaw and have been eating on that most of today. Wound up trying to stay on the road at dinnertime, so I stopped at a Hamburger Royalty fast-food chain and learned they now sell the Preposterous Fake Meat Burgers rather than the veggie patties. It was edible, I suppose.
I feel like there should be an award for successfully clearing the fridge, given the circumstances involved. I stuck all of the gallon jars of flour in, so they won't go rancid, plus the jug and bottle of olive oil.
As expected, Emma has been a champ. She protested for about 2 hours and then settled in to the routine and had no problem finding her food plate. She also found the empty cat food tin before I finished preparing her dinner, and licked it clean. I made her a little blanket nest in the back seat and she has alternated between that and my lap (although I squirm way too much).
Absolutely beautiful sunset near Cleveland, with a big sky and everything. It was interesting to watch the horizon open up as I left New York. The sunset went on for like 2 full hours.
Are all of the stands of dead trees in New York elm, ash, or both?
I started out thinking I would need to make ~600 miles/day, but then at some point today I got confused and started thinking the total distance was 3600 miles, not 2400, and got worried about trying to do 900 miles a day. So I'm relieved to rediscover that I was correct about the 600 miles, which means I can loosen up a touch tomorrow.
The Honda needs a new left front blinker light, as best I can tell. Are those easy to fix?
So, day 1: Syracuse - Buffalo - Erie - Cleveland on I-90, then south on I-71 to Columbus, then west on I-70.
