Exam number two is now graded.

I asked students to step up their game, you remember?

This was not an easy exam.

They stepped up.

The best part is when a student has been really struggling, and that student steps up. It is incredible to get to witness that happening. There are stages in teaching that are weird and awkward and uncomfortable and frustrating and slow - more so for the students than the instructors, but I empathize with those negative feelings. Learning really isn't easy or intuitive.

Not all students stepped up. I worry about those ones: is there something I'm doing or not doing that's contributing? I'm remembering reading Difficult Conversations: it's not a matter of credit or blame, hard situations are a product of multiple contributing factors and parties, and I can never know everything that might be going on with my students (nor should I know, nor would I want to know!). I might be unintentionally contributing but it's a two-way street.

Still, a lot of students stepped up, and that's huge.

WHich version of the book did you have (authors)? I bought a copy (haven't read it yet) but I am not sure I bought the one people talk a lot about.
