In the last two days, I have received two requests for help with data analysis. In one case, it's clearly in my best interest to help because I'll be a coauthor on resulting papers. In the second case, I'm reminded of two things:

1. "Hey, will you make a piece of art for me for free? It will be good for exposure."

2. Our current systems for giving academic Biologists credit for code-writing are nonexistent.

For the second request, I sent along a link to my website for now. Argh, I need to re-tool it, but NOT in the Fisher Price Smart-o-Phone way. More in a GitHub kind of direction.

I also want to mention that I'm continuing to go through a lot of emotional ups and downs regarding this whole "academia" thing. Ups: As I reflect on my experiences here, I can tell I've come a long ways from those days back at ASU, and I continue to be satisfied with the things I'm learning from my research, and the fantastic people I have the privilege of working with.

Downs: The manuscript backlog isn't getting any better (too much new data!), and I don't know what else to do to demonstrate to potential future academic employers that I will be a great asset to their research community. If I don't win this academic lottery, I can't take it all that personally, because academia remains an exploitative pyramid scheme. But it still seems a real shame to have to strategize about how to step away, if/when I reach that stage. It also seems like it would be a big shame to divert my expertise and energy into private enterprise, so in that regard I have some thinking to do about what alternative directions I could take.

I still have a year left here, at least.

What do you envision a github-like website doing for you?
