I called a sewing machine place this morning and ordered a Janome HD1000. The shop is down in Alameda, so I won't be able to pick it up until a week from tomorrow, but that's okay. They charged the same price as Amazon, but as a Janome retailer I'll have a 25-year warranty instead of zip, zero, zilch. And maybe there will be less packaging involved. And I will have supported a smaller business.

I just want a machine that's reliable for sewing projects. It's very hard to get proper tension with the Kenmore, although I'll certainly keep the Kenmore around.

My gaiter pattern and other pieces of hardware have come in from Seattle Fabrics, so I'm just about ready to sew up my custom cycling gaiters.

...and so of course, this morning, I finally tracked down a place selling nylon spats. That said, there's no telling how heavy-duty those spats are (you should check out the other products sold by that company), and they still don't cover the toes.

I also suspect that it will stop raining as soon as I finish making these.

However, if they work well, I may make a couple more pairs for other people who want them.

Today I learned that the LUNGS make blood.

Just pause and think about that for a moment.

Where did you think blood was made? The bones? Ahaha. Outdated knowledge now.

I'm reminded of learning about a newly discovered organ in the human body.

These are the kinds of things that need to be taught in college Introductory Biology courses. I feel like this could wake students up to the importance of ongoing scientific inquiry.
